Fishes

Our monkey and reptile house also provides an exciting insight to the ecosystem "water" in our freshwater and marine aquariums with the beautifully colored species of fish.

In the saline basin you can watch colorful damselfish (Pomacentridae family) and cardinalfish (Apogonidae) which were scientifically analyzed only a few years ago. There are also clownfish (Amphiprioninae) swimming among the foliage and colorful corals and sea anemones. Through our marine aquariums you get a small glimpse into the world of tropical coral reefs that are very rich in species but are also one of the most threatened habitats in the world.

Two freshwater aquariums house some species of endemic cichlids (Cichlidae) usually living in the central African Lake Tanganyika as well as various fishes from Southeast Asia. Especially interesting are the Glass catfish (Kryptopterus bicirrhis) with their diaphanous skin which allows you to take a look at the viscera of a fish. The elegant gourami (Osphronemidae) are closely related to the climbing gourami (Anabas). They have an additional organ called a labyrinth that allows them to breath athmospheric oxygen. Because of this feature they are able to live in unfavorable habitats.
