Hoofed animals

Lots of different hoofed animals are populating the open steppe and grass landscape of Africa. Some representatives you can find on the naturally designed African enclosure, newly opened in 2004. From an observation pavillon you can watch characteristic looking Blue wildbeest (Connochaetes taurinus), threatened Hartmann`s mountain zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae) and the Natal red duikers (Cephalophus natalensis), which are rarely found in zoos.

The biggest animal species of Landau Zoo is the Arabian camel or dromedary (Camelus dromedarius). The dromedaries which are also called "ship of the desert", because of their swinging gang, enjoy to take a bath on the sandy ground of their enclosure.

The colorful Red river hogs (Potamochoerus porcus pictus) are native to the humid rainforest areas of Africa. A family of these tropical Wild boars is sharing a newly designed enclosure with Ancole cattle (Bos primigenius taurus), which attract attention because of their impressive horns. You may feed these animals with zoo pellets, which you can buy at the zoo entrance.

If you are lucky you can see well hidden Kirk's dik-diks (Madoqua kirkii) living together with various bird species in our large free flight aviary.

The most threatened deer of the world is the Philipine spotted deer or Visayan spotted deer (Cervus alfredi). Since 2004 we are keeping the International stud book for this species in our zoo. Behind the bear compound, Reeve's muntjacs (Muntiacus reeversi), which are also called "barking deers" because of their peculiar sounds, are sharing their enclosure with several bird species.
