Australian animals

You can find two typical animal species of the spacious landscape of the Australian Outback, the Red-necked wallaby (Macropus r. rufogriseus) and the Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) in our 2005 newly built Australian enclosure. The enclosure is partly passable and the visitors can take a close look at the cute marsupials skipping around. The Emus, biggest running birds of Australia will surely leave a deep impression with their in a deep orange coloured iris and their thumb guttural sounds, similar to a knocking.

Less known, but not less interesting are other inhabitants of Australia, the Blue-winged kookaburra (Dacelo leachii) the Australiean magpie and the Bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). The wonderfully colored Blue-winged kookaburras are one of the biggest representatives of the species of the kingfisher. In spring you can hear their call, which reminds you of a human laugh and gave them their German nickname "Lachender Hans" (laughing jackass), throughout Landau Zoo.

A group of primaeval looking Bearded dragons lives in a large terrarium in the monkey house. With a bit of luck visitors can watch one of these saurians "puffing up", trying to impress visitors or group members, while nodding their heads.
