African animals

Most of the hoofed animals, e.g. wildebeests and zebras are from Africa.

Among the African species of monkeys, as largest representatives of the primates, we have to mention our chimpanzees as well as the White-crowned mangabeys (Cercocebus atys lunulatis) which are extremely threatened by extinction. Landau Zoo is presently the only German zoo in which this species lives and is bred.

Some smaller residents of Africa, like the Spiny-tailed lizards (Uromastix acanthinura) and the cute Short-eared elephant-shrews (Macroscelides proboscideus) are also living in the monkey and reptile house.

Among the predators you will find the elegant Sudanese cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii). Very popular are the Meerkats (Suricata suricatta), living in the African enclosure. Like the Banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) they are living in groups and always watch their surroundings carefully. Several times the breeding of Fennec foxes (Fennecus zerda) was successful.

In the zoo you can find several species of African birds. In the aviary and the neighbouring parrot house you can find Fisher's turacos (Tauraco fischeri), Lilac-breasted rollers (Coracias caudata) or Hammerkops (Scopus umbretta). The Grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus), which have been resocialized after years of private keeping in a specially designed aviary, are always very lively and a lot of fun to watch.
