Asian animals

The Blue peacocks or Common peafowls (Pavo cristatus) should be the most famous animals with origin in Asia. When they spread their tail, the free-range cocks not only impress their plainly colored hens.

The White-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar), originating from the rain forests of Southeast Asia are not only interesting because of their loud "duets", which you can hear throughout the zoo. It is very impressive to see how speedy and skillful these "small" anthropoids are swinging their way through the spacious outdoor area.

The Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) which are currently very popular as pets, are also living in the monkey and reptile house. Next door, one of the freshwater aquariums is dedicated to fish species from Southeast Asia, like Clown fish (Chromobotia macracanthus), Ghost fish (Kryptopterus bicirrhis) and Blue gouramis (Trichogaster trichopterus).

The Indian porcupines (Hystrix indica) are very bizzare representaives of rodents and they know very well how to use their spiky stings for defense.

We are very proud of a group of Phillipine spotted deer or Visayan spotted deer (Cervus alfredi). In contrast to their small Asian cousin, the Chinese or Reeve's Muntjak (Muntiacus reevesi), these beautiful stags are threatened by extinction and urgently need help to be able to survive.
