Madagascan animals

The island of Madagascar possesses remarkable flora and fauna. Madagascarīs long isolation from the neighboring continent has led to the development of a large number of endemic plants and animals that live only on this island and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The special Madagascar enclosure in Landau Zoo displays a small part of its fantastic flora and fauna. You can try to find the Oplurus quadrimaculatus, a lizard of the Iguana family, Day geckos (Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis), or the Uroplatus geckos in their enclosure. In the water you will find the Madagascan big-headed turtles (Erymnochelys madagascariensis). They are the only ones currently living in Europe. Madagascan birds are represented in Landau Zoo by the Madagascan partridges (Margaroperdix madagarensis).

In the monkey and reptile house in a separate terrarium lives a pair of the cute Lesser hedgehog tenrec (Echinops telfairi). Although they look quite similar to European hedgehogs the small mammals are not related to each other.
