Monkeys & apes

The monkey and reptile house in the Landau Zoo was originally built in 1963. In 2001 we finished improving and expanding the building. Many different kinds of monkeys and apes now live in the spacious and naturally decorated enclosures. The largest species are our chimpanzees. Two of them, "Fips" and "Susi," are over 50 years old.

Here in Landau we are very proud of our White-crowned mangabeys (Cercocebus atys lunulatus). They have become very rare in their natural habitats in Western Africa. At present Landau is the only German zoo that cooperates in a international conservation breeding program for this threatened monkey species.

The monkey house is also the home of a large family of Brown-headed spider monkeys (Ateles fusciceps robustus), White-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar) and two species of the Family Callithricidae: the Golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosali) and the Pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea).

Our Squirrel monkeys (Samiri sciureus) share a large open-air aviary with Macaws. There you can watch them swinging on ropes, climbing trees, and playing together. You will have a lot of fun watching them especially during the summer.
