Reptiles & Amphibians

If you are interested in these fascinating animals, you will find some representatives of the species in our monkey and reptile house.

Cuvier`s dwart caimans (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) are living together with various South American terrapins and Green iguanas (Iguana iguana) in a big tropical terrain, bringing the rain forest a little bit closer to our visitors. Here you can watch turtles and caimans through an underwater window while they are feeding.

Next to them Red-tooted tortoises (Geochelone carbonaria), Marmoset monkeys (Callithricidae) and the agile Acouchis (Myoprocta acouchy) are living together peacefully.

The Madagascar terrarium, newly built in 2001, gives space for various species of animals and plants which are typical of this island. Green day geckos (Phelsuma madagscariensis grandis) and Madagascar iguanas (Oplurus madagascariensis) are keeping company with weavers, Madagascar partidges (Margaroperdix madagariensis) and the archaic looking Madagascan big-headed turtles (Erymnochelys madagascariensis), which are only ones in Europe shown in our zoo.

Other smaller and also realistic designed terrariums are the home of big and small species of snakes, Bearded dragons (Pogona viticeps), Spiny-tailed lizards (Uromastyx acanthinura), Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) and Veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus).

As representatives of the amphibian family tiny, garish coloured Poison dart frogs (Dendrobates) and Phantasmal poison frogs (Epipedobates tricolor) are hunting along moss and flowering Bromeliads (Guzmania lingulata).
