Parrots
The parrots are the best known and most popular bird species.
Landau Zoo presents several important kinds of parrots ranging from small Amazone parrots to large Macaws. Our largest and most colorful species are two kinds of South American Macaws: the Red-and-green macaw (Ara chloroptera) and the Blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna). These impressive and sometimes very loud birds share an open-air aviary with Squirrel monkeys.
In the parrot house you can see the Ecuadorian Red-lored (Amazona autumnalis lilacina), a close relative to the Red-lored amazon. The Ecuadorian Red-lored amazons are threatened by the destruction of their natural habitat and by pet trade. The Ecuadorian red-lored amazon and the Red-lored amazon look very much alike.
The large tropical aviary is right next to the parrot house. There we have established a smaller "rescue and reintegration aviary" for African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) with sponsorship money. The Congo African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) and the Timneh African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus timneh) are the most popular subspecies of African grey parrots. Unfortunately these birds are often kept alone which makes the social animals suffer greatly. We can offer an appropriate home for confiscated and some of the animals donated from private keepers.
