Birds

Not only do penguins and different parrots live in our zoo but also other bird species from different families.

Besides our free-roaming and vociferous African helmeted guineafowls (Numida meleagris) and peafowls (Pavo) you can also watch numerous wild birds like Grey Herons (Ardea cinera), storks, ducks, or Common moorhens (Gallinula chloropus).

We have a large number of different birds from the Ciconiiformes family. The Grey crowned (Balearica gibbericeps) and European cranes (Grus grus) display their elegant courtship dances in spring. Colorful ibises (Threskiornithidae), extraordinary spoonbills (Plataleinae), White storks (Ciconia ciconia) and Abdim`s storks (Ciconia abdimii) also belong to this bird species.

The so-called Hammerkops (Scopus umbretta) build very interesting nests. They share an aviary with Yellow-necked spurfowls (Francolinus leucoscepus) and Spotted thick knees (Burhinus capensis). You can also see Madagascan partridges (Margaroperdix madagarensis), colorful Turacos (Musophagidae), Lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudata), and Reichenow´s weaver (Ploceus baglafecht reichenowi).

We are very proud of our large colony of Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis). Other waterbirds in our zoo are Brazilian ducks (Amazonetta brasiliensis) and Inca terns (Larosterna inca). The Inca terns are great fliers and are closely related to gulls because they belong to the Laridae family.
