Predators
If you are fascinated by predators, Landau Zoo has something to offer even if the term carnivores is more matching
for this group of animals.
Especially loved by the children are our
South American fur seals and
California sea lions (Pinnipedia) which belong to the water predators.
Our magnificent male
Jaguar likes observing his environment carefully or "fights" to get his meat, for which it has to work, in our zoo. In the future the whole predator house with all of its enclosures will be rebuilt and expanded in order to have a breeding couple of this species.
In the meantime wild
European lynx have been reintroduced in the Palatinate Forest. Two of these medium sized wild cats live at our zoo.
Being the world's fastest land predator when hunting, the Northeast African
cheetahs live in an exterior enclosure situated at a slope, which after the rebuilding in 2006, leaves the opportunity to regularly seperate the male from the female. This is necessary for later breeding success.
Along historic fort walls lies one of the largest
brown bear enclosures in Germany with a size of of 7,000 sqm. From our wooden bridge you have a view on the whole enclosure and can discover the fast Corsac foxes who share the large enclosure with our bears. Our
fennecs who also belong to the canides are the animals with the biggest ears in comparison to their size.
Belonging to the so-called family of Viverridae, groups of
meerkats and
banded mongoose live in their own enclosures with hiding places, where they disappear in a flash, as soon as one of the "guards" reports a danger.
"'Predators to stroke'" are the domesticated ferrets belonging to the zoo school, which is an important regional environmental education facility at our zoo. Anybody who likes to get to know these cute animals, which are related to the polecat, from close-up may have his next birthday party in the Landau Zoo or can enroll for the class in the zoo school.
