Chile

The populations of Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) living on the coasts of Chile and Peru are threatened by extinction. The animal's natural basis for life is destroyed by human influence. Due to the overfished sea, the penguin's food has become very rare. The drastic changes in climate and their effect on the fish populations make the situation even worse. Many penguins die in fishing nets or are either killed to be eaten or used as lure. Since Guano (bird's excrements) is sold as high-quality fertilizer world wide, the penguins loose their breeding places, especially in Peru.

Landau Zoo collaborates with the local institutions to protect the Humboldt penguins and their coastal and marine habitat. We work together in establishing educational programs for children and adults; we support campaigns and projects in a spiritual and material way and we exchange research findings about the biology of the penguins. We therefore hope to be able to preserve the populations of Humboldt penguins in the future.

This projects is further supported by the Friends of Zoo Landau, Zoos Bremerhafen, Osnabrück, Magdeburg as well as Dublin and Kolmarden. It is recognized as an official project of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, WAZA.
