DjiboutiFrom a biological point of view Djibouti, the small country at the so-called "Horn of Africa" is one of the most important regions on this continent. Many indigenous animals like antelopes and gazelles are only found here and in the neighboring countries Ethiopia and Somalia. Furthermore, Djibouti lies directly on one of the classic migration routes of birds which come from the Eurasian continent to Africa. One of the last remaining forests of the region which is unique for its juniperus and box trees, the so-called "Foret du Day", is increasingly destroyed and therefore some species living in this forest are also threatened by extinction. That is why Landau Zoo supports the local nature conservation organization "Djibouti Nature (former Wildlife Protection Organization, WPO)" to protect nature and species in this country. One example of this is the endemic Djibouti francolin (Francolinus ochropectus).Like in many countries, Djibouti also lacks public awareness of the threats to its local flora and fauna. Landau Zoo and the "Institute for Elementary Educational Theory" of the University of Landau in cooperation with Djibouti Nature and local authorities have therefore set it as their goal to further educate Djiboutian teachers in terms of protection of species and environment. Lectures and working material on conservation for Djiboutian school children have been developed and are being tested in several partner schools. This projects is further supported by the German conservation NGO "Naturschutzbund Deutschland, NABU" and the Friends of Zoo Landau. It is also recognized as an official project of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, WAZA. [Back to Conservation] |
